Dive Reports May 2011

5/20/11 Sat. Wreck of the “Advance”; Very light West Breeze, Cloudy, Air Temperature 72deg, Gentle 2’ or less swell no waves, Calm and almost no current. Nice Day on the water!!! First Dive: Surface Temperature 72degs, Bottom Temp 61degs.. Second Dive: Surface Temperature 66degs, Bottom Temp 54degs… Water is mixing and warming up early!! Visibility on Wreck reduced with mixing waters 8’ to 15 ‘ viz.. Had good dives with great group of divers. Saw Porpoises playing, small Loggerhead Turtle living on wreck, the Advance is covered with Atlantic Aneomies. Few fish above Wreck but inside was loaded with Tau Tog Blackfish. Had great fun with this group of mostly newer divers. Jerry was a great inspiration and wonderful person. Tobin did a great job on his first dive as a certified diver, (1st dive, 1st ocean dive, 1st boat dive and 1st wreck dive!), GREAT Job! We Enjoyed grilled hot dogs and music on the surface interval … All had FUN!

5/2811 Sat. Zane Gray; Beautiful day on the Zane Gray! Bottom visibility 40-60 ft, variable. Bottom temperature 54 F. Mid-water temperature 60 F. Surface temperature 73 F. Two pronounced thermoclines at 10-15 ft and 40 ft. South winds 10 kts. Seas 2-3 ft with 9 second period. Light currents throughout water column. Tautog tautog tautog! There were tautog (blackfish) galore today!! We had never seen so many tautog here before. They were both swimming around the outside of the wreck and lurking inside the vessel. There were also a few black sea bass. This wreck is characterized by a variety of invertebrate species including yellow sea whips, star coral, buttercup colored tunicates, white and brown anemones, encrusting orange sponges, and numerous mussels. We had a great group of divers today! We had the pleasure of having Brad on board for his first dive in this area, the Johnston brother trio, and Jerry and Adrian!
